ASHAAcademy of Self Healing Arts

The ancient healing arts, for men living in a new world.

The invitation

Most of us men were not shown the gifts of our bodies, minds & their endless potential.

The map we inherited — earn, endure, provide, don't flinch — was drawn for a century that has already ended. It was not wrong, but it is out of alignment, and it leads somewhere limited. Followed faithfully, it produces men who are competent at everything except being at home in our own bodies.

ASHA is not a course in becoming someone else. It is a co-created programme to put down the map and learn to read the terrain directly: how attention actually works, where tension is stored, what a nervous system is asking for, how to sit with something difficult with presence.

The methods are ancient. The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali refined this a few thousand years ago; Reiki for about a century, on far older Japanese understandings of ki, the universal life force. The Master Key is the newest of the three, written by a modern man who understood these practices deeply.

The arts are not gendered. The room is different, though, when the work is done among men, which is where the imbalance needs rectifying.

Four pillars

How the work moves

Every practice here passes through the same four stages. We will walk the circle many times, and it will be a different circle each time.

स्मृति

気づき

Awareness

Seeing what is actually here.

Before anything can be addressed it has to be noticed, and most of what runs us has never once been looked at directly. The first pillar is unglamorous: learning to feel the breath you are already taking, the jaw you are already clenching, the story you are already telling. Nothing needs be learned and yet a great deal becomes visible.

Discourse

Learning out loud, in company.

We sit, we take up one thing, and we understand it honestly enough that it costs something. We learn it deeply so an existing belief can be shifted. We learn through questioning & introspection to feel the truth of what is taught.

03
साधना

Exploration

Practice, repeated until it tells the truth.

Nothing here is asked to be believed. A practice is a proposal, and we run it long enough to find out what it actually does to us — daily, through the weeks where every day brings a new challenge to apply our understanding to.

Mastery

When the art and the artist are one.

Mastery is not a summit and it is not performance. It is the point where the practice shows up in how you breathe into every waking moment. It is the point where we realise that we can be always at the mountain top.

The three practices

Yoga, Reiki & the Master Key

ASHA shares three practices: one from India, one from Japan, and one from the recent West. Without having met, the practices arrive at the same place. All three start with the body and expand from there. All three are older and wider than the versions we have been taught.

They are working practices for the human experience, refined by people who paid close attention. We share them without asking anyone to adopt a costume or a belief.

योग

Yoga

Yoga is not a workout. Patañjali defines it as the stilling of the movements in the mind, and sets out eight steps to get there. Āsana, the postures most people mean by Yoga, is only one of the eight. The practice starts with awareness, and ends in the absorption of stillness.

The eight limbs
  • yamahow you treat others
  • niyamahow you treat yourself
  • āsanaposture
  • prāṇāyāmabreath
  • pratyāhāraturning the senses inward
  • dhāraṇāconcentration
  • dhyānameditation
  • samādhiabsorption
霊気

Reiki

Rei is universal; ki is the life energy that moves through everything. Reiki, as Mikao Usui taught, is not a technique done to you or a belief you sign up to. It is a relationship with that energy that flows through us, one anyone can learn: received in a session, then practised on yourself, and carried into how you live.

Usui's five principles

Just for today:

  • I will not anger
  • I will not worry
  • I will be grateful
  • I will work honestly
  • I will be kind to every living thing

The Master Key

Charles Haanel published The Master Key System as twenty-four lessons. It is the plainest account we have of attention as something you can train: hold the body still, then the mind, then a single image, and watch what thought does when it stops wandering. And experience the results of this attention in your daily life.

Three of its teachings
  • the subconsciousruns what it is given
  • the conscioustrainable, like a muscle
  • the mindwhere it all begins

Four pathways into the work

Start wherever you actually are. Most people begin with an evening of meditation practice and discourse, and the retreats find them later.

Meditation & Discourse

Practice of Yoga's inner limbs, then one topic taken seriously.

90 minutesSmall group or one to one

We begin with breath and a guided sit, prāṇāyāma and dhyāna, long enough to actually arrive: around forty-five minutes. Then we take up a single topic and stay with it: fear, fathers, desire, work, death, whatever is live. Not a lecture, and not therapy. It is a room where men learn out loud without performing, which is rarer than it should be.

The conversation topics are chosen in the present moment for discourse.

Reiki Session

Energy connection through the Usui tradition.

60–75 minutesOne to one, in person or remotely

With the intention of amplifying your connection to the universal life force, Reiki is channelled through. People usually experience a sense of deep relaxation and well-being during and after a session. Reiki is not something only the practitioner has, though. The same relationship with energy is yours to learn, and a session is often where that starts.

Good first session if you would rather feel something than only discuss it.

Week-long Retreat

Long enough for the noise to drop.

7 daysResidential, small group

Seven days of a simple, fixed rhythm: early practice of posture, breath and meditation, Reiki sessions, shared silence, and discourse in the evening around real food. All of it anchoring a life lived with presence.

Held a few times a year arranged through conversation.

Month-long Retreat

For the ones making a transformational shift.

28 daysResidential, arranged through conversation

A month is a different order of thing. It is long enough to practise Yoga in its full breadth, and to make Reiki a daily practice of your own. Long stretches of solitary practice, one-to-one work throughout.

Arranged through conversation.

The place

Where the retreats are held

Retreats are held somewhere quiet and unfussy, chosen for what it does not have: no schedule beyond ours, no traffic, no reason to look at a screen. There is space to sit indoors and space to sit outside, and the walk between them is long enough to count as practice.

The photographs give a fair sense of it. The rest is easier to describe in person.
